Former Bristol councillor faces arrest

A FORMER Bristol councillor faces arrest for failing to pay a fine imposed after she was found guilty of using a racist remark to describe a colleague.

Magistrates issued a warrant for Shirley Brown after she failed to appear at court to explain why she had only paid £10 of the £920 she owed.

It is understood she phoned the court to ask for the case to be adjourned as she was unwell and had pains in her legs.

But magistrates decided, in her absence, to issue a warrant and recorded that if Mrs Brown did not start paying off the fine she faced 28 days in jail.

Mrs Brown, 49, stood down as a Liberal Democrat councillor from the Ashley ward in February after eight years, saying she would instead continue to serve the community in her role as a church minister.

She had been dogged with controversy since making a comment at Bristol City Council's budget setting meeting in February 2009. She described Asian Conservative councillor Jay Jethwa as a "coconut", a racial slur used to describe someone who is "black on the outside but white on the inside".

My comment: Should have paid up and kept a low profile.

UPDATE 10/5/11: Shirley Brown attempts to cancel arrest warrant with sick note. Her legal advisor also informed the magistrates that on a previous occasion she had said she would prefer to go to prison than pay the fine, because she could not afford it now she was no longer working as a councillor.

My comment: Go to jail, do not pass go and do not collect any more expenses!
