Devon County Council puts sensitive data about children put online

SENSITIVE information relating to children in Devon has been accidentally published online, in breach of data protection laws.

Devon County Council is currently examining dozens of documents which had been made available on its website to assess the amount of damage done.

The authority took the action after the Echo made it aware that it had published financial details relating to children who had been excluded from schools in the county as well as children with special educational needs (SEN).

A reader, who asked not to be named but has been campaigning for tighter data protection regulation, said: "This information should never have been accessible within the public domain and searchable from any computer in the world.

"In my opinion it is shameful incompetence and local government authorities should be better at self-policing."
