Blitz on Council card sharps

HIDDEN squandering of taxpayers’ cash by “card sharp” local authority staff on fine dining, expensive wine and upmarket hotels will finally be exposed after a move by coalition minister Eric Pickles.

The Communities Secretary has challenged council chief executives to publish the costs of “small scale” hospitality being put on corporate credit cards.

There are more than 140,000 public sector cards, called Government Procurement Cards, held by senior council staff across the country.

Around 40 per cent of all spending on Government Procurement Cards is made by local authorities. To date there is no requirement to disclose this spending.

Receipts from these cards are expected to reveal that taxpayers are bankrolling ­hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on luxurious hospitality.

My comment:  Eric, we need more than a challenge to expose senior council officer abuse we need a statutory order.
